Every New York block has one. The corner store with the yellow or red awning, the fruit stand out front, the handwritten signs, the lottery tickets in the window and, if you are lucky, a cat asleep on the bread shelf. The bodega is not just a store. For a lot of people it is the center of the block, and that is exactly why it makes such a good graphic tee.
What makes a bodega a bodega
"Bodega" is the word New Yorkers use for a small corner deli or grocery. The word comes from Spanish, and it became the city's word largely through Puerto Rican and Dominican communities who ran so many of these stores. Ask ten people what makes a real bodega and you will hear the same list:
- The awning. Big block letters: GROCERY, DELI, CANDY, the name of the store.
- The window. Lottery signs, beer neon, handwritten prices, an OPEN sign that never turns off.
- The counter. A sandwich made to order, a coffee, a loose snack, whatever you need at 11 p.m.
- The cat. The unofficial staff.
Why bodega cats are a thing
Bodega cats started for a practical reason: corner stores carry food, and cats keep mice away. Over time they became the store's mascot. People photograph them, follow them online and visit their favorite ones. A cat curled up on the chips or watching the door is one of the most recognizable images of New York street life, and it is a big reason "bodega cat shirt" is a thing people search for.
Why the corner store works on a shirt
A good graphic tee tells a story in one look. The bodega does that better than almost anything:
- It is instantly readable. An awning and a cat in the doorway say "New York" faster than a skyline.
- It is personal. Everyone has their bodega. The shirt reminds you of yours.
- It has built-in color. Bright awnings, red brick, green fruit crates and neon signs.
- It is not a tourist logo. A corner store is something locals love, not something on a souvenir rack.
The Bodega Skelly NYC Tee
We built the Bodega Skelly NYC Tee around all of it. The front shows a grocery and bodega corner with a yellow awning, an OPEN sign and lottery tickets in the window, fruit crates out front and a bodega cat in the doorway. On the sidewalk, kids crouch over a chalk skelly board with bottle caps as pieces. If you have never heard of skelly, read What Is Skelly?.
- 100% cotton heavyweight t-shirt in a unisex streetwear fit, sizes S–2XL
- Red is the featured colorway, and it also comes in Forest Green, Navy, Natural, Black and Mustard
- Scene on the front, blank back
- Made to order and arrives in 7–8 business days in the US, printing included
The other side of the block: The Millennial
The Millennial – Construction Yellow picks up the same block a few squares down: kids on a chalk hopscotch grid, a brick wall, a fire hydrant and bottle caps under the board, with MILLENNIAL stacked underneath. It is in a Construction Yellow the color of work boots, with a blank back. Wear the two as a pair across the week.
How to wear a bodega t-shirt (without it looking like a souvenir)
Keep everything else quiet
A full-front scene is the loudest thing in the outfit. Pair it with straight jeans or work pants, simple sneakers and one neutral layer.
Pick the color for the season
Red and Mustard in summer and early fall. Forest Green, Navy and Black when it gets colder. Natural if you like a vintage look.
Layer so the scene shows
Open flannel, open chore coat, unzipped hoodie. Do not cover the awning. See our NYC streetwear guide for fall for full outfits.
Make it a set
Bodega Skelly one day, The Millennial the next. Same block, two stories.
Care
Wash inside out in cold water with mild detergent, no bleach and no heat on the print. Hang dry to keep the colors bright, especially on red.
The bodega as a meeting point
Part of why the bodega lands on a shirt is that it is where the block meets. It is where you buy a drink after school, where someone holds a package for a neighbor, where you catch up with the guy behind the counter about the game. Long before anyone used the word "community" to sell anything, the corner store was doing it for free. The kids playing skelly out front in our print are part of that same picture: a game made from bottle caps the store sold, on the sidewalk the store faces.
City tees vs souvenir tees
A souvenir tee usually puts a landmark and the city name on the front. A city tee shows a moment from street level: a corner, a game, a hydrant. That is the line between our City tees and the ones at the airport. Nothing on the Bodega Skelly or The Millennial spells out the city in big letters. If you know, you know.
